With the onset of World War I and its deadly aerial dogfights between warring pilots, the rush was on to develop flying bombs and robot planes that could patrol the skies unmanned. In the United States, three men, working independently and unbeknownst to each other, developed these early forerunners to the modern-day cruise missile. Two of these men were highly educated and successful engineers who received government funding for their ideas and became well known for their pioneering research. The third man, however, was an Italian immigrant of modest means, little formal education, and no funding. He nonetheless conceived the idea of an unmanned flying torpedo, constructed the weapon, successfully test flew the device, and then patented it in Washington D.C.

That man was Giuseppe Rossi, and this is his story. Until now, his early invention has remained unknown in the annals of American military history. Now everyone can read the story of this unsung patriot through a fact-finding mission undertaken by his grandson, Richard B. Rossi. As a child, Rossi first came across his grandfather’s invention while rummaging through his family’s photo albums. He discovered a yellowed newspaper article with a picture of his then young grandfather and a headline that read, “Robot Planes? A Natick Man Flew Over One in R.I. 1918.”

Despite the enormous military significance of his grandfather’s invention, the device never got to see the light of day. As Rossi became an adult, he made it his endeavor to find out why. In his research into both family and military history, Rossi discovered answers that shine a light on the very different country the United States was at the end of the First World War. His account is both an easy-to-read military history and an immigrant saga of acculturation. Told through different generations of the Rossi clan, this bravura act of fact-finding demonstrates how one notorious invention affects a family across time.

Patent for Murder eBook Richard B Rossi

Patent for Murder is a fast-paced, thrilling first novel by Richard Rossi. The story is told through two points of view, the personal experiences of a grandson (Richard) and the narrative of the life of his grandfather (Giuseppe). While the book is about the development of a weapon and has a historical background to World War I, what makes the story more interesting is that it is really about family. The book describes the good times and the hard times of an American family, at once during a time when the Rossi's were first immigrants and then again generations later. The author pays tribute to his family in a heartwarming way that makes the reader feel what the characters are going through and anticipates the suspense of what might happen next. I highly recommend this book as a relevant and inspirational story that is both nonfiction and fiction.

Patent for Murder eBook Richard B Rossi Reviews

Awesome book. Easy/quick read. I could see this book becoming a movie.
I hope there is a sequel coming soon.
I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoyed reading "Patent For Murder". From the very beginning the author brought the story together making me want to read more. In fact I read the book in one day... it is that good! The history behind the characters as told through the grandson makes me wonder what is fact and what is fiction. I can easily see this being made into a movie.
"Patent For Murder" is definitely worth reading if you enjoy thrillers. The story line and Richard Rossi's easy writing style makes you not want to put the book down. The flying torpedo prototype created by his grandfather Giuseppe Rossi, and the somewhat hostile issues it created for the author in today's time make this story truly entertaining. The book mentions a possible sequel in the future, and I will enjoy reading it when completed.
I was initially interested in reading the book because I grew up in the location that the story is set in and knew the author many years ago. I quickly discovered that the book stands on it's own in both the story plot and the history of early 20th century life of the Italian immigrant community in the mill towns of Rhode Island. The author has done an incredible job researching his family history and the potential world changing invention of his grandfather interspersed with modern life and events.
