''A dishy, gossipy, flirty, sexy, dramatic and--of course gay--romance of the theater. Richard Taylor Pearson introduces us to the players behind a would-be Broadway hit. The hunky leading man is adored by the nervous newcomer who is intimidated by the catty understudy, and all of them are getting stroked, cajoled, browbeaten and manipulated by a mad genius director who holds 'private sessions' before rehearsal. If you eat up backstage intrigue, if you have playbill.com bookmarked, if Tony night is your Super Bowl, you will definitely get into The Role! --David Pratt, author of Looking After Joey and Bob the Book

'"The steamy debut novel adds an overlay of confused identity to what is essentially a fantasia, with a Cinderella makeover swirling Mason into the limelight and the affections of a previously unattainable hunk...and there's a splendid supporting cast of colorful, well-drawn secondary characters.'' --Kirkus Reviews

Mason Burroughs is an actor on the verge of giving up after being turned away at audition after audition. But his life changes when he bumps into Kevin Caldwell, an old crush from acting school. Kevin helps Mason land a role that could make him the next Broadway star. However, as rehearsals begin, Mason learns that there’s a lot more drama than just what’s on stage. With a personal trainer claiming he can mold his body to resemble a Greek statue, an underhanded understudy waiting in the wings to replace him, a megalomaniacal director, and Kevin hellbent on breaking up Mason and his boyfriend, Mason must choose how much he is willing to sacrifice to make his Broadway dream a reality.

Big chances, colorful personalities, and the passionate pursuit of professional theater coincide all at once for main character Mason Burroughs, a young man with a wonderful long-time boyfriend and an acting talent that he's starting to undervalue. What are the odds that an old scene partner should suddenly appear in an audition and help him to land his big break on Broadway? And how complicated is it that this scene partner is the charming and handsome former friend for whom Mason spent a long time trying to shake his unrequited romantic feelings? For anyone who has ever grappled with the balance between your passion for your work and your personal life off the clock, Mason's ongoing dilemma as he throws everything he has at his preparation for The Role will ring incredibly true. How can Mason help his game-coder boyfriend understand the emotional and physical strains of the rehearsal process while abiding by his demanding big-time director's secrecy requirement?

As an avid fiction reader and a great lover of theater, both as performer for more than twenty years and an audience member, I felt fully drawn in to the world of The Role. This is a great novel for people who have ever auditioned for a role in a theater production, and wondered how much tougher a run at Broadway would be. This is also a great novel for grown-up romance fans intrigued by the difficulty in being able to distinguish what feelings are real, and which are amplified by being a part of the fast-paced intoxicating rehearsal process. The fast paced plot follows the development cycle of the show, and traces the developing and complicated feelings of each member of the love triangle. I greatly enjoyed this fast-paced read, and I look eagerly forward to Mr. Pearson's next novel. Do yourself a favor and buy this book, and enter a world of grown-up love, "showmance", ambition, and struggle to keep it all in balance.

Great first book! Good read! It kept me interested through out.
What a fun read! The intrigue, romance, and backstage drama made this book a real page turner. A great debut novel!
This book is wonderful. I read it in one sitting. I could not put it down. The characters are fleshed out so well. I love the Mason and Eric characters. Mason's journey and growth was fantastic to witness. I would give this book more than 5 starts if possible. It a great read and one I am recommending to all my friends.
I tried something different and was pleasantly surprised by this one. I was cheering for the main character, Mason from beginning to end. Mostly because he was so human! He makes all the mistakes we all make in life even when we are trying to do the right thing. It was nice to see a good guy get what he dreams of and works hard for in life, while balancing the rest of daily life and some surprising obstacles. I look forward to Mason's next role.
As a former theater geek and booklover I really enjoyed this debut! I must admit I started reading mostly because I knew Richard 's husband in high school but as soon as I read his dedication on the first page I knew he was an amazing author as wel. Before I realised it I was up until 2 am trying to finish asap!
I totally love how wel written the story of the play within was and how this makes it stand out as so much more than just the one story. The in depth characters made me feel like a part of broadway and I am so planning another nyc trip now. Please more of this!
If you're looking for a great read, this is the book for you! It features Mason, who's trying to make his way on Broadway. He has a little help and lands a big show. What I liked most about this was that, despite Mason having every chance to take the easy path with his cast mate, he stays strong. Yes, he goes to great lengths for the friendship they form, but in the end, he knows what's right and wrong.

The writing is very strong, which is also a plus. Richard really brings the characters to life on the page and it's easy to get sucked into the character's lives. Every time I sat down to read, I was able to identify with the characters. I was able to feel what they felt, and they came to life easily. So again, if you're looking for a great read, something different, this is the book you want!
"The Role," is complicated, angtsy fun. Mason Burroughs is a wannabe Broadway actor. Little does he know that an old friend, and former crush, Kevin, will make things complicated for him by first getting him "the role" in a very important production. A life changing, soul searching, relationship changing role. Once he accepts the gig, life changes for him.

This is a great book, full of gossipy Broadway insight, mixed in with a twisted story of unrequited love and a tale of romance.
